Who can benefit from Pilates?

Pilates is suitable for all age groups, fitness levels and bodies, including people:

  • Looking to improve posture, flexibility, muscle strength and tone
  • Recovering from injury or following surgery
  • Athletes and sports people by improving strength, control and efficiency
  • Work cover and TAC patients
  • School and corporate groups
  • Pre and post-natal women

Based on the method introduced by Joseph Pilates more than 75 years ago, Pilates:

  • Focuses on your deep postural muscles, commonly known as “the core”
  • Achieves smooth and efficient movement
  • Improves alignment, breathing and body awareness
  • Is a non-impact form of exercise
  • Combines strengthening and stretching simultaneously

In combination with efficient aerobic activity (walking, cycling, swimming, etc), Pilates trains the body to achieve a long lean result.

Clinical Pilates

Clinical Pilates is an individually tailored approach to Pilates, that uses both floor exercise and Pilates equipment. Our Pilates trained physiotherapists will assess and guide you through a progression of exercises for specific injuries, general fitness or your individual goals. Your technique and form will be checked and monitored either individually or in a small groups, depending on your preference.

How to get started with Clinical Pilates?


Every individual starting Clinical Pilates with Lake Health Group will require an assessment with one of our physiotherapists. These assessments run for 30 minutes, and cover your injury/health history, your goals and needs, and a thorough assessment of your posture and strength.

From that assessment, a further 2 or 3 appointments with your physiotherapist is generally needed to allow you to safely and confidently perform your program. After that the physiotherapist will in, conjunction with you, recommended your best options going forwards. This may be small or intermediate group work, further one on one appointments of an independent program. At Lake Health Group we are one of the few places that offer independent memberships to our Pilates studio.

Fitness Pilates

Fitness Pilates are group Pilates classes, either equipment or mat based, for those looking to improve their posture, flexibility, core strength, tone, fitness and efficiency of movement.

These classes are not individualised and are suitable for people who do not have any current injuries. There classes can take the form of mat classes, reformer classes, Barre classes and power Pilates and running specific classes. Fitness Pilates may be conducted by either a physiotherapist or Pilates Instructor, depending on the class.

Private classes can be provided for Corporate groups on request.
