Who can benefit from Pilates?

Pilates is suitable for all age groups, fitness levels and bodies, including people:

  • Looking to improve posture, flexibility, muscle strength and tone
  • Recovering from injury or following surgery
  • Athletes and sports people by improving strength, control and efficiency
  • Work cover and TAC patients
  • School and corporate groups
  • Pre and post-natal women

Based on the method introduced by Joseph Pilates more than 75 years ago, Pilates:

  • Focuses on your deep postural muscles, commonly known as “the core”
  • Achieves smooth and efficient movement
  • Improves alignment, breathing and body awareness
  • Is a non-impact form of exercise
  • Combines strengthening and stretching simultaneously

In combination with efficient aerobic activity (walking, cycling, swimming, etc), Pilates trains the body to achieve a long lean result.

Fitness Pilates

Fitness Pilates are group Pilates classes, either equipment or mat based, for those looking to improve their posture, flexibility, core strength, tone, fitness and efficiency of movement.

These classes are not individualised and are suitable for people who do not have any current injuries. There classes can take the form of mat classes, reformer classes, Barre classes and power Pilates and running specific classes. Fitness Pilates may be conducted by either a physiotherapist or Pilates Instructor, depending on the class.

Private classes can be provided for Corporate groups on request.

Closure of Group Exercise Programs

Please note that Lake Health Group are going to immediately cease group classes and only have 2 members access the gym at any one time using their membership.

As coronavirus is serious and Victoria is in a state of emergency it is in our best interests to look after our clients and we feel 2 clients in a room allows enough safe distance (1.5 metres)

This guideline regarding gym usage is reviewed daily based on government recommendations. We request you book your appointment with administration with only 2 spots available at any given time to undertake your independent program in the gym.

For people in group classes who cannot access the programs, please arrange a one on one appointment with Jamie or Josh so that a home program can continue in the interim until group classes at Lake Health Group resume.

Closure of groups will be at least one month at this stage, but we will update you via our clinic, social media and website.

We thank you for your patience at this time.

Updated 16th March 2020

You might be aware that as of the 1st April 2019, government legislation has ruled that certain natural therapies will no longer be recognized as claimable under private health insurance. Pilates is included in this legislation. This includes classes where “Pilates” is the only exercise regime offered, and where classes are marketed and conducted with “Pilates” exercises.

We know and believe that personal goals, evidenced based exercise and ongoing support from our fantastic physio team can only contribute to your ongoing health and well-being and what a view we all get to enjoy from the Lake Wendouree Studio.

So, what does this mean for you as a client of Lake Health Group and as a Pilates user?

  • The good news is that if exercise classes draw from some of the Pilates principles and include other specific exercises and the class are facilitated by a physiotherapist, then these classes are still deemed to be claimable under private health insurance and will now be called ‘Exercise Classes’ or ‘Mat Exercise Classes’
  • It is critical that each person undertaking these classes still undertakes an individual assessment with specific goals that are targeted towards a person’s specific needs. All programs will be reviewed and updated regularly based upon the goals and individual program.
